Slip, trip or fall...

If you have been injured as a result of tripping or falling you may well be entitled to compensation..

Accidents like this can happen in the street, in shops, at work or on any other premises. The occupier of those premises has a legal duty to ensure that you are safe when you are walking on their premises and will often have an insurance policy. You can use this to claim your compensation for your injury and also any loss of earnings as a result of not being able to work.

What do you do if you have had an accident?

  • It is very important to notice the surroundings in which your accident occurred. Note the general condition of the floor (wet, dirty, worn etc.). Also note the specific condition which caused the fall so that you can describe the substance, defect, or other condition.
Slip, trip or fall...
  • Take the details of any witnesses if possible.
  • Take photographs of the defect on which you fell if you can - camera phones are great for this! If you have tripped on something try and put a match box, ruler or something similar by the defect to get a perspective on how high the defect is.
  • Try and measure the height of the defect.

If the accident has happened in a shop or at work

  • Always report the accident to another member of staff, ideally your boss.
  • Make sure the accident is reported in the accident book at work.
  • Never admit the accident was your fault. Even if you think you are at fault always speak to us first.
  • Seek medical help. Don't be embarrassed to go to your Doctor or visit the hospital. You need to have your injuries recorded.
