| Statement of Fitness for Work or 'Fit Note'
Absence management is a huge issue for employers and in June 2007 to June 2008 it is estimated that around 5.8 million scheduled working days were lost due to sickness or injury with a cost of millions to UK employers and the economy.
In an effort to help employees return to work sick notes are changing to Statements of Fitness for Work or ‘fit notes’ as from April 2010.

| Increased Paternity Leave for New Fathers
Currently fathers who are employees are entitled to two weeks paternity leave compared to new mothers being entitled to 52 weeks paid maternity leave.
This is all set to change advises Louise Haward Solicitor in the Employment Team at Derby based solicitors Smith Partnership.

| Agency Workers Regulations 2010
The Agency Workers Regulations 2010 are due to come into force on 1st October 2011.
The regulations will give agency workers the same basic working and employment rights as permanent members of staff after 12 consecutive weeks' work in the same role with the same end user (hirer) and prohibit detrimental treatment or dismissal of agency workers on the ground of their status.
